1 a shorthand reference for charities that claim freedom from U.S. taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; cannot participate in political campaigns, but some limited lobbying activity is allowed; donors identities can be shielded from public scrutiny
If the group is a 501(c)(3), the councilmembers say it appears to be violating laws that prohibit such organizations from 'directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office.'San Jose Spotlight
